સુંદરકાંડ.
અથ સપ્તષષ્ટિતમસ્સર્ગઃ||

એવમુક્તસ્તુ હનુમાન્ રાઘવેણ મહાત્મના|
સીતાયા ભાષિતં સર્વં ન્યવેદયત રાઘવે||1||

સ|| મહાત્મના રાઘવેણ એવં ઉક્તઃ તુ હનુમાન્ સીતાયા ભાષિતં સર્વં ન્યવેદયત||

Thus asked by Raghava, Hanuman related everything that was said by Sita.

ઇદમુક્તવતી દેવી જાનકી પુરુષર્ષભ|
પૂર્વવૃત્ત મભિજ્ઞાનં ચિત્રકૂટે યથાતથમ્||2||

સ|| પુરુષર્ષભ દેવી જાનકી ચિત્રકૂટે પૂર્વ વૃત્તં અભિજ્ઞાનં ઇદં ઉક્તવતી યથા તથમ્||

'Oh Bull among men ! Divine Janaki related to me as a token of identification, an incident of the past that occurred on the Chitrakuta as it is'.

સુખસુપ્તા ત્વયા સાર્થં જાનકી પૂર્વમુત્થિતા|
વાયસઃ સહસોત્પત્ય વિદદાર સ્તનાંતરે||3||
પર્યાયેણ ચ સુપ્તત્વં દેવ્યંકે ભરતાગ્રજ|
પુનશ્ચ કિલ પક્ષી સ દેવ્યા અજનયત્ વ્યથામ્||4||
પુનઃ પુનરુપાગમ્ય વિદદાર ભૃશં કિલ|
તતસ્ત્વં બોધિતસ્તસ્યાઃ શોણિતેન સમુત્‍ક્ષિતઃ||5||

સ|| ત્વયા સાર્થં સુખસુપ્તા જાનકી પૂર્વં ઉત્થિતા વાયસઃ સહસા ઉત્પત્ય સ્તનાંતરે વિદદાર||ભરતાગ્રજ ત્વં પર્યાયેણ દેવ્યંકે સુપ્તઃ સઃ પક્ષી પુનશ્ચ દેવુઆઃ વ્યથામ્ જનયતિ કિલ ||પુનઃ પુનઃ ઉપાગમ્ય ભૃશં વિદદાર કિલ | તતઃ ત્વં તસ્યાઃ શોણિતેન સમુક્ષિતઃ બોધિતઃ કિલ||

' Earlier when she was lying down along with you, she woke up early and a crow came swiftly and scratched on her breast. Rama ! Then you woke up and you slept in her lap. The bird again started hurting her. Again and again the crow came and scratched her.Then being wetted by her blood, you woke up'.

વાયસેવ ચ તે નૈવ સતતં બાધ્યમાનયા|
બોધિતઃ કિલ દેવ્યા ત્વં સુખસુપ્તઃ પરંતપ||6||
તાં તુ દૃષ્ટ્વા મહાબાહો દારિતાં ચ સ્તનાંતરમ્|
અશી વિષ ઇવ ક્રુદ્ધો નિશ્વસન્ અભ્યભાષથાઃ||7||
નખાગ્રૈઃ કેન તે ભીરુ દારિતં તુ સ્તનાંતરમ્|
કઃ ક્રીડતિ સરોષેણ પંચવક્ત્રેણ ભોગિના||8||

સ|| પરન્તપ તેન વાયસેનૈવ સતતં બાધ્યમાનયા દેવ્યા સુખસુપ્તઃ ત્વં બોધિતઃ કિલ||મહાબાહો સ્તનાન્તરે દારિતામ્ તામ્ દૃષ્ટ્વા કૃદ્ધઃ આશીવિષૈવ નિઃશ્વસન્ અભ્યભાષથાઃ||ભીરુ તે સ્તનાંતરં કેન નખાગ્રૈઃ દારિતં| સરોષેન પંચવક્ત્રેણ ભોગિના કઃ ક્રીડતિ||

' Oh Scorcher of enemies ! Troubled by the crow repeatedly , the divine lady woke you and informed you. Oh Strong armed one ! Seeing her scratched on her breasts, furious like a hissing serpent you said this. "Oh Timid one ! Who scratched on your breasts with the tip of their nails. Who is sporting with an enraged five hooded serpent ?"

નિરીક્ષમાણઃ સહસા વાયસં સમવૈક્ષથાઃ|
નખૈઃ સરુધિરૈઃ તીક્ષ્‍ણૈઃ તામેવાભિમુખં સ્થિતમ્||9||
સુતઃ કિલ સ શક્રસ્ય વાયસઃ પતતાં વરઃ|
ધરાંતરચરશ્શીઘ્રં પવનસ્ય ગતૌ સમઃ||10||

સ|| નિરીક્ષમાણઃ સરુધિરૈઃ તીક્ષણૈઃ નખૈઃ તામેવ અભિમુખં વાયસં સહસા સમવૈક્ષત||પતતામ્ વરઃ સઃ વાયસઃ શક્રસ્ય પુત્રઃ| ધરાંતરચરશ્શીઘ્રં કિલ | શીઘ્રં ગતૌ પવનસ્ય સમઃ||

" Seeing all around, you saw the crow with blood on its sharp nails standing in front of her. Foremost among birds, the crow is the son of Indra, moving about all over the earth. In speed he is equal to Vayu".

તતસ્તસ્મિન્ મહાબાહો કોપ સંવર્તિતેક્ષણઃ|
વાયસે ત્વં કૃથાઃ ક્રૂરાં મતિં મતિમતાંવર||11||
સદર્ભં સંસ્તરાદ્ગૃહ્ય બ્રહ્માસ્ત્રેણ હ્યયોજયઃ|
પ્રદીપ્ત ઇવ કાલાગ્નિઃ જજ્વાલાભિમુખઃ ખગમ્||12||
ક્ષિપ્તવાં સ્ત્વં પ્રદીપ્તં હિ દર્ભં તં વાયસં પ્રતિ |
તતસ્તુ વાયસં દીપ્તઃ સદર્ભોsનુજગામ હ||13||

સ|| મહાબાહો મતિમતાં વર કોપસંવર્તિતેક્ષનઃ તતઃ તસ્મિન્ વાયસે ક્રૂરાં મતિં કૃથાઃ||સઃ સંસ્તરાત્ દર્ભં ગૃહ્ય બ્રાહ્મેણ અસ્ત્રેણ યોજયત્| સઃ દીપ્તઃ કાલાગ્નિઃ ઇવ દ્વૈજં અભિમુખઃ જજ્વાલ||ત્વં પ્રદીપ્તં તં દર્ભં વાયસં પ્રતિ ક્ષિપ્તવાન્ | તતઃ સ દર્ભઃ દીપ્તઃ વાયસં પ્રતિ અનુજગામ હ||

"Oh Strong armed one, revered among the wise, with anger in your eyes you made up your mind about the crow. Taking a blade of grass from the mat , you invoked it with Brahma's powers. Then he blazed like the fire at the time of dissolution, and hurtled towards the bird. You hurled the blazing blade of grass on the crow. Then the blazing blade of grass followed the crow".

સ પિત્રા ચ પરિત્યક્તૈઃ સુરૈશ્ચ સમહર્ષિભિઃ|
ત્રીન્ લોકાન્ સંપરિક્રમ્ય ત્રાતારં નાધિગચ્છતિ||14||
પુનરેવાગતસ્ત્રસ્તઃ ત્વત્સકાશ મરિંદમ|
સ તં નિપતિતં ભૂમૌ શરણ્યઃ શરણાગતમ્||15||
વધાર્હમપિ કાકુત્‍સ્થ કૃપયા પર્યપાલયઃ|

સ|| સઃ પિત્રા સમહર્ષિભિઃ સુરૈશ્ચ પરિત્યક્તઃ ત્રીન્ લોકાન્ સંપરિક્રમ્ય ત્રાતારં ન અધિગચ્છતિ|| અરિન્દમ ત્રસ્તઃ પુનરેવ ત્વત્ સકાશં આગતઃ શરણ્યઃ સઃ કાકુત્‍સ્થઃ શરણાગતં ભૂમૌ નિપતિતાં તં વધાર્હં અપિ કૃપયા પર્યપાલયઃ||

' Abandoned by his father, the great seers as well as Suras and having gone around the three worlds he could not find a saviour. Oh Destroyer of enemies ! That crow came back trembling to you for protection and fallen on the ground seeking protection.Then the Kakutstha with kindness saved the one who deserved to be killed.'

મોઘમસ્ત્રં ન શક્યં તુ કર્તુ મિત્યેવ રાઘવ||16||
ભવાંસ્તસ્યાક્ષિ કાકસ્ય હિનસ્તિસ્મ સ દક્ષિણમ્|
રામં ત્વાં સ નમસ્કૃત્ય રાજ્ઞે દશરથાય ચ||17||
વિસૃષ્ટસ્તુ તદા કાકઃ પ્રતિપેદે સ્વમાલયમ્|

સ|| રાઘવ અસ્ત્રં મોઘં કર્તું ન શક્યં ઇત્યેવ ભવાન્ તસ્ય કાકસ્ય દક્ષિણં અક્ષિ હિનસ્તિ સ્મ||રામ તદા સઃ કાકઃ વિસૃષ્ટઃ ત્વામ્ રાજ્ઞે દશરથાય ચ નમસ્કૃત્ય સ્વં આલયં પ્રતિપેદે||

' Raghava ! It was not possible to withdraw the divine weapon. So you struck the right eye of the crow instead. Rama! Then the crow thus saved offered salutations to you and Dasaratha and went back to its abode '.

એવમસ્ત્ર વિદાં શ્રેષ્ઠઃ સત્ત્વવાન્ શીલવાનપિ||18||
કિમર્થમસ્ત્રં રક્ષસ્સુ ન યોજયતિ રાઘવઃ|
ન નાગા નાપિ ગંધર્વા ના સુરા ન મરુદ્ગણાઃ||19||
ન ચ સર્વે રણે શક્તા રામં પ્રતિ સમાસિતુમ્|

સ|| શીલવાન્ અપિ રાઘવ એવં અસ્ત્રવિદામ્ શ્રેષ્ઠઃ સત્યવાન્ બલવાન્ અપિ રક્ષસ્સુ અસ્ત્રં કિમર્થં ન યોજયતિ||રણે રામં પ્રતિ સમાસિતું નાગાઃ ન સુરાઃ ન મરુદ્ગણાઃ ન ગંધર્વાઃ ન ||

' Oh Raghava ! That way being of good conduct, the foremost among wielders of weapons, truthful and powerful , why are you not using weapons against the Rakshasas. It is not possible for Nagas, Gandharvas, Suras , Marut ganas, or anybody else to face Rama in a battle'.

તસ્ય વીર્યવતઃ કશ્ચિત્ યદ્યસ્તિ મયિ સંભ્રમઃ||20||
ક્ષિપ્રં સુનુશિતૈર્બાણૈઃ હન્યતાં યુધિરાવણઃ|
ભ્રાતુ રાદેશ માજ્ઞાય લક્ષ્મણો વા પરંતપઃ||21||
સ કિમર્થં નરવરો ન માં રક્ષતિ રાઘવઃ|

સ|| વીર્યવતઃ તસ્ય મયિ સંભ્રમઃ અસ્તિ યદિ સુનિશિતૈઃ બાણૈઃ રાવનઃ ક્ષિપ્રં યુધિ હન્યતામ્||પરન્તપઃ નરવરઃ રાઘવઃ સઃ લક્ષ્મણો વા ભ્રાતુઃ આદેશં આજ્ઞાય માં કિમર્થમ્ ન રક્ષતિ||

' Oh Very valiant one ! If you have any concern for me you will certainly slay Ravana with sharp arrows in the battle immediately. Oh Scorcher of enemies ! The best of men Rama or even Lakshmana with the orders of his brother , why are they not protecting me?'

શક્તૌતૌ પુરુષવ્યાઘ્રૌ વાય્વગ્નિસમતેજસૌ||22||
સુરાણામપિ દુર્દર્ષૌ કિમર્થં મામુપેક્ષતઃ|
મમૈવ દુષ્કૃતં કિંચિન્મહદસ્તિ ન સંશયઃ||23||
સમર્થૌ સહિતૌ યન્માં નાવેક્ષેતે પરંતપૌ|

સ|| શક્તૌ વાય્વગ્નિ સમતેજસઃ પુરુષવ્યાઘ્રૌ તૌ સુરાણાં દુર્ધર્ષૌ યદિ અપિ મામ્ કિમર્થં ઉપેક્ષતઃ||મમૈવ મહત્ કિંચિત્ દુષ્કૃતં અસ્તિ| સંશયઃ ન| યત્ સમર્થાવપિ પરન્તપૌ તૌ મામ્ ન અવેક્ષેતે||

' The two tigers among men, equal in power to to Vayu and Agni, being unassailable even to gods, why are they neglecting me. I must have done some sin. No doubt. Even though capable, the scorchers of enemies are not protecting me'.

વૈદેહ્યા વચનં શ્રુત્વા કરુણં સાશ્રુભાષિતમ્||24||
પુનરપ્યહ માર્યાં તા મિદં વચનમબ્રુવમ્|
ત્વચ્છોકવિમુખો રામો દેવિ સત્યેન તે શપે||25||
રામે દુઃખાભિભૂતે તુ લક્ષ્મણઃ પરિતપ્યતે|

સ|| કરુણામ્ સાશ્રુભાષિતમ્ વૈદેહ્યાઃ વચનમ્ શ્રુત્વા અહં પુનરપિ તાં આર્યાં ઇદં વચનં અબ્રવમ્||દેવિ રામઃ ત્વત્ શોકવિમુખઃ સત્યેન તે શપે | રામે દુઃખાભિપન્ને લક્ષ્મણઃ પરિતપ્યતે||

Hearing those piteous words spoken with tears by Vaidehi , I again spoke to the venerable lady. " Oh Divine lady ! I swear to you Rama is full of grief. With Rama filled with sorrow Lakshmana too is deeply afflicted".

કથંચિત્ ભવતી દૃષ્ટા ન કાલઃ પરિશોચિતુમ્||26||
અસ્મિન્મુહૂર્તે દુઃખાનાં અંતં દ્રક્ષ્યસિ ભામિનિ|
તાવુભૌ નરશાર્દૂલૌ રાજપુત્રાવનિંદિતૌ||27||
ત્વદર્શનકૃતોત્સાહૌ લંકાં ભસ્મીકરિષ્યતઃ|
હત્વા ચ સમરે રૌદ્રં રાવણં સહબાંધવમ્||28||
રાઘવસ્ત્વાં વરારોહે સ્વાં પુરીં નયતે ધ્રુવં|

સ|| ભામિની કથંચિત્ ભવતી દૃષ્ટા પરિદેવિતુમ્ કાલઃ ન | ઇમમ્ મુહૂર્તં દુઃખાનાં અંતં દ્રક્ષ્યસિ||નરશાર્દૂલૌ અનિન્દિતૌ મહાબલૌ ત્વત્ દર્શન કૃતોત્સાહૌ ઉભૌ તૌ રાજપુત્રૌ લંકાં ભસ્મીકરિષ્યતઃ||વરારોહે રાઘવઃ રૌદ્રં સહબાંધવં રાવણં સમરે હત્વ ચ ત્વાં સ્વાં પુરીમ્ નયતે ધૃવમ્||

" Oh Lovely lady ! Somehow you have been found. This is not the time for lamentation. This moment you will see the end of grief . The two princes, tigers among men, the blameless and mighty ones, desirous of seeing you will burn down this Lanka to ashes. Oh Best among women ! Furious Raghava killing Ravana with all his relatives will certainly take you back to his city'.

યત્તુ રામો વિજાનીયાત્ અભિજ્ઞાનમનિંદિતે||29||
પ્રીતિસંજનનં તસ્ય પ્રદાતું ત્વ મિહાર્હસિ|
સાભિવીક્ષ્ય દિશઃ સર્વા વેણ્યુદ્ગ્રથન મુત્તમમ્||30||
મુક્તાવસ્ત્રાદ્દદૌ મહ્યં મણિમેતં મહાબલ|

સ||અનિંદિતે રામઃ યત્ વિજાનીયાત્ તસ્ય પ્રીતિ સંજનનં અભિજ્ઞાનં ઇહ દાતું ત્વં અર્હસિ|| મહાબલ સા સર્વાઃ દિશઃ અભિવીક્ષ્ય વેણ્યુદ્‍ગ્રથિતં ઉત્તમં એતં મણિં મહ્યં દદૌ||

" Oh Blameless one ! You need to give a token of recognition which Rama knows and which generates happiness". Oh Powerful one ! She looked in all directions, untying this gem which is worn on her hair, from her clothes and gave it to me'.

પ્રતિગૃહ્ય મણિં દિવ્યં તવ હેતો રઘૂદ્વહ||31||
શિરસા તાં પ્રણમ્યાર્યાં અહમાગમને ત્વરે|

સ||રઘૂદ્વહ દિવ્યં મણિં તવ હેતોઃ પ્રતિગૃહ્ય આર્યાં તાં શિરસા પ્રણમ્ય અહં આગમને ત્વરે||

' Foremost among Raghus ! Taking this gem for your sake, bowing with my head to the venerable lady I returned quickly.'

ગમને ચ કૃતોત્સાહં અવેક્ષ્ય વરવર્ણિની||32||
વિવર્થમાનં ચ હિ મામુવાચ જનકાત્મજા|
અશ્રુપૂર્ણમુખી દીના ભાષ્પસંદિગ્ધભાષિણી||33||
મમોત્પતનસંભ્રાંતા શોકવેગસમાહતા|

સ|| વરવર્ણિની જનકાત્મજા ગમને કૃતોત્સાહં વિવર્ધમાનં ચ માં આવેક્ષ્ય ઉવાચ||અશ્રુપૂર્ણમુખી દીના ભાષ્પસંદિગ્ધભાષિણી મમ ઉત્પતનસંભ્રાતા શોકવેગ સમાહતા||

'The fair complexioned daughter of Janaka, seeing me growing and getting ready for returning said the following. With a face filled with tears, piteous, with words drenched with tears, concerned with my departure, shedding tears she said the following'.

હનુમન્ સિંહસંકાશા વુભૌ તૌ રામલક્ષ્મણૌ||34||
સુગ્રીવં ચ સહામાત્યં સર્વાન્ બ્રૂયા હ્યનામયમ્|
યથા ચ સ મહાબાહુઃ માં તારયતિ રાઘવઃ|
અસ્માદુઃખાંબુ સંરોધાત્ ત્વં સમાધાતુમર્હસિ||35||

સ|| હનુમાન્ સિંહસંકાશૌ તૌ રામલક્ષ્મણૌ ઉભૌ સહામાત્યં સુગ્રીવં ચ સર્વાન્ અનામયમ્ બ્રૂયાઃ || મહાબાહુઃ સઃ રાઘવઃ અસ્માત્ દુઃખામ્બુસંરોધાત્ યથા તારયતિ ત્વં સમાધાતુમ્ અર્હસિ||

" Oh Hanuman ! Tell both Rama and Lakshmana, the two lions among men as well as Sugriva along with all his ministers about my welfare. You can make the arrangements so that Raghava with powerful arms can save me from the ocean of sorrows".

ઇમં ચ તીવ્રં મમ શોકવેગં
રક્ષોભિરેભિઃ પરિભર્ત્સનં ચ|
બ્રૂયાસ્તુ રામસ્ય ગતસ્સમીપમ્
શિવશ્ચ તે sધ્વાસ્તુ હરિપ્રવીર||36||

સ|| હરિપ્રવીર રામસ્ય સમીપં ગતઃ મમ ઇમં તીવ્રં શોકવેગં એભિઃ રક્ષોભિઃ પરિભર્ત્સ્યનં ચ બ્રૂયાઃ | તે અધ્વા શિવઃ અસ્તુ||

"Oh Best of Vanaras ! Go near Rama. Tell him about the intensity of my great sorrow, as well as the threats from the Rakshasas. Let your journey be speedy and auspicious".

એતત્ત વાર્યા નૃપરાજસિંહ
સીતા વચઃ પ્રાહ વિષાદપૂર્વમ્|
એતચ્ચ બુદ્ધ્વા ગદિતં મયા ત્વમ્
શ્રદ્દત્સ્વ સીતાં કુશલાં સમગ્રામ્||37||

સ|| પરાજસિંહ આર્યા સીતા વિષાદપૂર્વં એતત્ વચઃ તવ આહ| મયા ગદિતાં તત્ બુધ્વા સીતાં સમગ્રાં કુશલાં શ્રદ્ધત્સ્વ||

' Oh Lion among Kings ! Venerable Sita spoke these sorrowful words for you. "What all has been said by me, that let him know". Oh Rama ! Sita is safe in all respects. Have faith'.

ઇત્યાર્ષે શ્રીમદ્રામાયણે આદિકાવ્યે વાલ્મીકીયે
ચતુર્વિંશત્ સહસ્રિકાયાં સંહિતાયામ્
શ્રીમત્સુંદરકાંડે સપ્તષષ્ટિતમસ્સર્ગઃ||

Thus ends the Sarga sixty seven of Sundarakanda in Ramayana the first ever poem composed in Sanskrit by the first poet sage Valmiki.
